The day of reckoning as arrived and the much awaited ‘White Paper’ is upon us with answers to all and any questions that could ever be asked on the issue of Scottish Independence. Well that is the bold claim by the Scottish Government that is stating its case for a Yes vote on the 18th of September 2014. The knives have been sharpened for some time along with the pencils eager to search for every possible error and every opportunity to decry it as sheer fantasy. The Westminster Unionists and their allies in Holyrood are optimistic that they will be able to rubbish this comprehensive document with the assistance of the British Media known only for their Unionist credentials.
How much of the White Paper is based on assertion or hard economic research and sound financial and political projection doesn’t really matter to the Unionist Establishment and its obedient lackeys because they will present it as fantasy regardless. Even if they did find anything in the document that made sense they are hardly going to say so for fear it might undermine their incessant campaign of installing dread and doubt in the minds of the electorate. Project Fear must continue and the British Establishment and its mass Unionist Media will go into overdrive to convince the people of Scotland that we are indeed ‘Too Wee, Too Poor and most certainly Too Stupid’ to be allowed to run our own country even if we wanted to. Much better to leave such grown up matters to the likes of ‘Auntie’ at the BBC and our ‘Self Appointed Guardians’ at Westminster to deal with. After all they have been successfully telling us what to do for the last 300 years or so and there seems no reason to them, at least, why that situation should not continue. It might be broke in the ‘Outer Regions’ of the ‘United Regions of England’ or more commonly referred to as the ‘United Kingdom’ but the Unionist ‘Heartlands’ in the ‘Home Counties’ are doing perfectly fine, thank you very much.
The fact that the political direction of Scotland has been travelling in the opposite direction of our neighbours south of the border for decades is more of an issue to us than it is to them. Indeed it is a ‘Non-Issue’ south of Gretna. The North/South divide is only apparent to those who are on the wrong side of that divide or so it seems, with the possible exception of those political rulers who wish to keep Scotland very much under their control. Whilst the people of Scotland are fed a daily diet of arguments and counter arguments the rest of ‘United Kingdom’ are at best slightly curious as to why we would want to give up all those subsidies and opt to struggle on our own instead. Every page, every paragraph, every sentence and every single word of the White Paper will be scrutinised with the proverbial ‘Fine Tooth Comb’. Think Tanks and ‘Highly Respected Experts’ will be duly wheeled out to pour scorn over every utterance and the mass ranks of the Unionist Campaign will meet every answer with another question. Yet at no point will the Unionist Campaign feel under any obligation or pressure to produce their own ‘White Paper’ in defence of the Union. They will not feel the need to justify the Status Quo or even an alternative to full independence because the Media will not ask them to. The same Media that will proclaim it has a moral right and duty to take the Scottish Government to task and challenge the integrity of this White Paper will not feel any need to apply similar standards to the Unionist Campaign or take them to task.
In all the Media Frenzy and the Political Pontificating over the content and credibility of the White Paper there will be a great deal of finger pointing from both sides. In all the point scoring the fact that the people of Scotland want more powers will be overlooked just as the fact that the Unionists have no intentions of delivering more powers will also be glossed over. Even many voters who are not prepared to sanction full independence realise that there is a genuine and overwhelming desire to have more control over our own decisions and resources. That is why a No vote that is achieved by Scaremongering and the promotion of Fear will not end a desire for more powers but only prolong that desire. Furthermore, if the predictions of betrayal and retaliation against the people of Scotland and the removal of powers and funding prove to be true then the Independence issue will definitely be back on the agenda. The people of Scotland have indicated a desire for more control of our own destiny and the Unionists must address that desire as much as the Nationalists have to or the final conclusion could be that which the Unionists fear the most.
